This is a print in memory of those lost to cancer and in aid of those fighting cancer. It’s a reminder that life can be short, so enjoy the ride. All proceeds from the print sale will go to Cancer Research UK. So, if you don’t fancy the print yourself, buy it for someone else. Or just make a donation to Cancer Research anyway. 

‘Enjoy the ride’ has been borrowed from Anthony Bourdain, but it’s a gentle nod to my dad, a keen cyclist, who lost his battle with cancer this year and who certainly enjoyed the ride.

Hand typeset in two weights of 40-line grotesque wood type (the largest in our collection) with 9pt and 12pt Haas Diethelm metal type, from the Desmond Jeffery collection. 

It has been inked by hand in shades of purple, with silver typographic details, and letterpress printed on 120gsm South Bank Smooth paper, in a limited edition.

Beer and type has long been a great combination, it’s pretty much a universal fact. But we thought we’d try to prove it anyway.

It turns out that not only do old brewery casks have wonderful names, but the amount of pints they hold relates rather nicely to traditional type sizes: 36, 72, 144…

The key on the left hand side proportionally represents pints as typographic points for each cask. For example; a 6pt square ‘em’ (6pts x 6pts = 36pts) represents a Pin cask (36 pints), whereas three 24pt ems show the not insubstantial 1728 p(o)ints found in a Tun.

Typeset by hand in a range of wood type and Monotype Grotesque, printed in metallic copper and warm grey.

The first of a series of wood type specimens starts with this beautiful 6-line (72pt) Stephenson, Blake Old Style No.5 italic.

From as early as 1912, Stephenson, Blake & Co began producing a range of wood letter typefaces based heavily on Caslon’s famous Old Face. Redesigned with shorter ascenders and descenders than the original hot metal version, they called these founts simply ’Old Style’.

Printed in black with the ampersand in both orange and green, with footnotes set in 8pt Monotype Garamond.
